Children First/Communities In Schools of Buncombe County Hosts Event for Read Across America

To celebrate Read Across America and Dr. Seuss's birthday, Children First/Communities In Schools of Buncombe County held a local celebrity reading on Friday, March 7th at Hall Fletcher and Johnston Elementary Schools.  Celebrity readers included Ken and Tammy from 96.5 WOXL, Asheville's City Police Chief Hogan, Commissioners Nathan Ramsey and Carol Peterson, City Council Members Carl Mumpower and Robin Cape, and volunteers from US Cellular and United Services Credit Union.  After the reading, every student received a book to take home.

Children First/Communities In Schools of Buncombe County received over 3,000 books from First Book through Communities In Schools of North Carolina.  The books that have been donated are for students ranging from 5 to 12 years old.  "This is an exciting opportunity for Children First/Communities In Schools of Buncombe County to be able to put a book in a student's hand that they can keep for themselves," said Allison Jordan, executive director of Children First/Communities In Schools of Asheville.  "We want to help the schools reinforce the importance of reading to students of all ages," said Jordan.

Children First Family Resource Center at Emma Sponsored Workshop

On Wednesday March 5th Children First Family Resource Center at Emma held the second session of Family Planning for Emergencies and Know Your Rights workshops. These workshops were designed in collaboration with several organizations: Coalition of Latin-American Organizations (COLA), Pisgah Legal Services, Nuestro Centro, and Morganton Workers Center. The goal of the workshops is to inform Latino families about their rights as parents, immigrants and tax payers and to tell how to protect their families, assets and especially their children and their childrens' futures. Close to one hundred people received this valuable information in the two workshops already held. The Emergency Family Planning segment introduced the importance of taking legal precautions in case of emergencies, like having a person appointed to represent the parents in the school system or health care systems to assure that their children will have their needs covered. The community response to the workshops has reaffirmed that the Children First Family Resource Center at Emma is responding to the needs of its community.

Topic: Exploring positive alternatives for youth at-risk of joining gangs

What is Child Watch

Child Watch, a cooperative effort of the Junior League of Asheville, Inc. and Children First/Communities In Schools of Buncombe County, gives participants the unique opportunity to personally experience just one of the challenges facing children in Buncombe County today. Child Watch supplements the facts with the emotions that numbers lack and tells the stories of real children who often go unnoticed among the statistics. In a nutshell, Child Watch is an issue-based field trip for adults.

Typically, Child Watch Tours last four hours and visit two or three sites. Participants hear from a variety of speakers and often participate in an experiential or role-playing activity.
