Dear Friend,
Through community
support, Children First was able to
provide 250 children with gifts for
Christmas. This was the largest number
of children that we had ever provided
gifts for. Also, we received donations
from 20 new sponsors. Thank you for
helping us put children first!
Project POWER/AmeriCorps
members and students from our homework
clubs are kicking off the new year by
participating in the Martin Luther King
Jr. activities this weekend. Please see
details below.
Good things are coming in

Children First Project
POWER/AmeriCorps members and students
from the Project MARCH Homework Clubs
will participate in the upcoming Martin
Luther King Day activities on Monday,
January 21st. "This is an
important day for children and youth in
our community to learn about an
inspiring role model who worked toward
making a difference," said Tammy Capps,
director of Project POWER/AmeriCorps.
Project POWER/AmeriCorps members are
chaperoning approximately 75 youth to
have a day of celebration honoring Dr.
King. The kids will make posters for

Champions for Children |

December Champion
for Children---
Cynthia Sellinger
Cynthia is the principal of Vance
Elementary School of Human Diversity
and Ecology. She has been an
educator in ACS for 26 years. She
began as a chorus teacher at
Asheville Middle and then moved into
administration as the assistant
principal at both Randolph
Elementary School and Vance
Elementary School, where she now
serves as principal.
As principal of Vance she has worked to
revitalize the school with a new magnet
theme and has entered the school as a
NASA Explorer School. The front yard at
Vance is now a huge community garden
where people from West Asheville can
often be seen picking vegetables and
flowers, and visiting.
Cynthia's warm and lively personality
has been the real magnet for the school.
She is always welcoming to families and
to other professionals and cares deeply
about her school and the children in her
school.
January Champion for Children---
Barbara Edwards
As a past volunteer at the Family
Resource Center at Emma, Barbara gave of
her time unselfishly, often times eight
hours a day, sometimes more, providing
any services that were needed. She
would help staff the front desk, pack
food boxes, and sort the clothing
closet. She would always willingly do
anything that was asked of her, despite
her own health problems. We are
thankful for the time she has given us.
Every month, Children
First's Board of Directors recognizes a
community member for their exceptional
dedication to children.

Advocacy Corner:
Help ensure hungry children have access
to healthy food
|
Congress can pass a final Farm Bill that
strengthens and enhances critical
nutrition programs, like the Emergency
Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), the
Food Stamp Program, and the Commodity
Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), that
help hungry Americans - many that are
children. The number of individuals and
families seeking assistance from food
banks across the country remains strong;
however, federal commodities to food
banks have declined drastically over the
past several years due to high food
prices. Quick passage of a final Farm
Bill is essential for charitable feeding
providers (like the Family Resource
Center at Emma) and the low-income
Americans they serve every day. The
Senate approval of the Farm Bill
(December 2007) was a critical step in
the process towards enactment of a final
Farm Bill conference report. However, it
is essential that the process continue
to move forward.
You
can make a difference! Call your
Senators today and urge them to support
the swift passage of a final Farm Bill
conference report with a strong
nutrition title as quickly as possible.
You can call Senators Richard Burr and
Elizabeth Dole via the AARP toll free
number 800-826-9624.

Fall Donor Campaign |
|
Did you know that 1 in 5 of our
community's children live in poverty?
This means that 20% of children may not
have access to warm clothing, adequate
health care or nutritious meals.
Help us raise $15,000 to support kids
through the Project MARCH Homework
Clubs, to educate community members to
inspire action with advocacy work and to
assist children, youth and their
families through the Family Resource
Center.
Together, we can
put children first!!
