Latino Learning Center

The Latino Learning Center is a partnership between Children First’s Family Room program, the YWCA, the N.C. Center for International Understanding, and Monterrey Technical Institute providing web-based computer literacy instruction to Spanish-speaking adults.

Students receive course instruction with an on-line tutor in Basic Computer Terminology, Internet, Email, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.  Classes are facilitated by trained Family Room staff on-site at Isaac Dickson Elementary School (evening classes) and the YWCA (morning classes).

The course runs twice a week for 5 months.  In addition to computer instruction, the program provides childcare and structured children’s activities.  We also partner with the Literacy Council to provide concurrent ESL instruction on-site at Isaac Dickson.  Participants benefit from access and information regarding other supportive services and programs, such as Motheread, the YWCA’s New Choices Program, AB-Tech Continuing Education Courses, Parent-Child Playgroups, and other family supports.
