April 29      Pre-K program Spanish version, Family Resource Center at Emma,
Tuesdays (for 6 weeks); 10-10:45 a.m.; This is a program for 2-5 year olds to prepare them for kindergarten. Activities include counting, drawing, singing, etc.  Free of charge. Open to public. Sponsored by Asheville City Pre School and Buncombe County Pre Schools.  Registration required:  call the Children First/CIS Family Resource Center at Emma at 828-252-4810.

May 2           12th Annual Child Watch Tour: “Positive Alternatives to Youth Gangs and Crime”, 12:30-4:30 p.m.; Space is limited.  Registration required:  call Greg Borom at 828-259-9717 or gregb@childrenfirstbc.org.  Sponsored by Children First/CIS and the Junior League of Asheville.  The tour provides interventions for youth at-risk of joining gangs or becoming involved in the criminal justice system.  The tour will visit Asheville Middle School, Caring for Children’s Crossroads Program, and the City of Asheville’s Reid Center.  Also, interactive exercises to foster learning and dialogue about the topic.

May 5           Plazas Comunitarias Basic Skills Registration; May 5th through May 26th ; This course is a prerequisite to class that will begin in September.  To register contact Norma Brown at 828-252-4810. 

May 5           Love and Logic Parenting Class; May 5 though June 30; Mondays; 5-7 p.m.; Family Resource Center at Emma; Learn parenting techniques on how to regain control of your household.  Open to the public.  Sliding fee scale; scholarships available.  Seating is limited.  Registration required by calling 828-252-4810.

May 8           “Journey through Art and Memories”; 9:00 – 11:30 a.m.; Family Resource Center at Emma.  Participants of the Motheread program will visit the YMI Cultural Center for an exhibit featuring memories of Africa.

May 8          Picnic in the Garden, Family Resource Center at Emma Community Garden; noon to 2 p.m.  Bring your own lunch.  Open to public.

May 8           Mind the Gap Tour; 3:45-4:45 p.m.; Family Resource Center at Emma; Please arrive by 3:30 p.m.  The Mind the Gap tour is an opportunity to see Children First’s programs first hand so you can help us close the gaps for a brighter future for our children.  Seating is limited.  Registration required by calling Jennifer Hampton at 828-259-9717 or jenniferh@childrenfirstbc.org.

May 16          “Immigration: A Journey Through Pictures and Words”, 6 p.m.; Family Resource Center at Emma.  Participants of the Together We Read will feature photos and stories taken from oral history interviews with members of the WNC”s immigrant community.  Open to the public. 

May 17          Hands-on Work Day in the Community Garden; noon to 3:00 p.m.; Family Resource Center at Emma Community Garden.  Open to the public. 

May 20          Positive Action Parenting Class; May 20 though July 15; Tuesdays; 5-7 p.m.; Family Resource Center at Emma; Learn parenting techniques through positive thoughts, actions and feelings.  Open to the public.  Sliding fee scale; scholarships available.  Seating is limited.  Registration required by calling 828-252-4810.

May 29          Health Education Seminar; 11 a.m. Family Resource Center at Emma; Open to the public.  Free of charge.  The seminar is to educate Latino Women on various health issues.  Sponsored by Children First/CIS and Missions Hospital.
