League of Women Voters co-sponsored by Children First/Communities In Schools of Buncombe County, Kids Voting and the Mountain Xpress will host two candidate forums: County Commissioners and Chairperson, Monday, October 20, 2008, 7-9 p.m. at the Randolph Learning Center and the State Legislative Races in Buncombe County, Monday, October 27, 2008, 7-9 p.m., at the Randolph Learning Center. The events are free and open to the public. Additional supporters include Christians for a United Community, Just Economics, MANNA Foodbank, North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement, NAMI, NAACP, and the United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County. The forums will be an opportunity for the candidates to discuss platform issues and answer written questions from the audience. The forums will be mediated by Nelda Holder, News and Opinion Editor of the Mountain Express. Candidates scheduled to participate for the Chairperson forum include: David Gantt (D) and Nathan Ramsey (R); the County Commission forum include: John Carroll (R), Mike Fryar (R), Holly Jones (D), Ron McKee (R), Carol Weir Peterson (D), William H. (Bill) Stanley (D), and Don Yelton (R). Candidates scheduled to participate for the State Legislative Race forum include: State Senate District 49 R. L. Clark (R) and Martin Nesbitt (D); State House District 114 Susan Fisher (D); State House District 115 Bruce Goforth (D) and Paul Purdue (R); State House District 116 Tim Moffitt (R) and Jane Whilden (D).
